Emersons essay on friendship is his way of delineating the paths of coherence. These paths fall into two distinct kinds. The first is the consistent enunciation of a view which is the master-tone that Emerson uses from essay to essay while the second is the internal linkage of the views in the essay. Some scholars have argued that Emersons views on friendship are strange and radical while others feel that his logic is sound and valid. This argument can only be settled by finding the deeper meaning in Emersons criticisms and praise of friendships. We find that there is a critical connection between friendship and other earthly phenomena which Emerson shows through the use of metaphors to create the assimilation of tangible and intangible things i n life. Emerson begins by describing how friendships begin. He states that they have nothing to do with putting in effort, worldly accomplishments or physical beauty. They have more to do with attraction or affinity. He asserts that this is what really matters in a friendship. Emerson states that when all is done, friendship makes us feel worthy in life. He states that as the best things in life, Emerson sees friendships as being spontaneous and unforced. Emerson states is that there are two distinct elements which go to the composition of friendship, . The first is sincerity and the second is tenderness. He says that we can scarce believe that so much character can subsist in another as to draw us by love. Here, Emerson refers to the tender anxiety that we feel when we are with another person to whom we are drawn. Emerson then undercuts tenderness by saying that I tender myself least to him to whom I am most devoted, (64). This means that he gives devotion more value than tenderness. He goes ahead and states that each of the two elements is so sovereign that there is none that is superior to the other. He states that there is no reason why either of the two elements should be named before the other. Through his use of the word sovereign, Emerson creates an aura of superiority. It creates a perception in the reader that what Emerson is writing about is to be respected to the highest level possible and that it is completely true and ho lds a lot of power. He goes ahead to state that though each of these elements should be highly appreciated and respected they hold the same weight and that each bears the same importance and has the same level of authority. Here he means that each of the elements is independent and has its own power. He states that no element can be compared to the other. Emerson then states that One is Truth, . By making this sentence short, Emerson gives it absolute power. It can been argued that by making this sentence longer, it would lose meaning and effect therefore Emerson was on point by making it short and straight to the point. It also leaves a mark for the readers to ponder as they read the essay. The following statement states that a friend is that person with whom I may be sincere, (64). He states that a friend allows him to think aloud before him and that he can remove the undermost garments of dissimulation, courtesy, and second thought, (64). Emerson uses the words undermost garments (64) as a metaphor to mean a mask. He states that with a true friend, a person can take of the mask that they wear for other members of the society. He then goes on to state that with a true friend he can deal with him with the simplicity and wholeness with which one chemical atom meets another, (64). Here, Emerson uses the word atom which is the simplest chemical form as a metaphor to mean the simplicity of nature that is the result of having a true friend. He refers to the process of an atom bonding with another where it does not think or discriminate when bonding rather it just goes about the bonding process. Emerson uses metaphors throughout his essay to represent different things. He states that sincerity is the luxury allowed, . He uses the word luxury (64) to arouse a feeling in the reader that friendship is a privilege and not a right. Emerson states that true friendship is when a person is privileged to have another with who they can be sincere and not have to watch what they say or do that it may hurt their feelings or offend them. He continues by saying that like diadems and authority, only to the highest rank, that being permitted to speak truth, as having none above it to court or conform unto, (64). Here, he uses the word diadems (64) to represent some sort of royal crown or power. The word authority (64) refers to the ability to give an even better privileged (64) feeling. Emerson concludes this thought by tying all metaphors together and stating that when a person is able to tell a person the truth without worrying that it may hurt or offend them is a huge luxury. Emerson states that friendship is a great achievement in life. In his essay, Emerson gives the value of friendship is extremely high, he also gives the true definition of having a true friend and differentiates between true friendship and simple friendship with human beings. In Emersons essay, he has sound logic and understanding of the concept of friendship since he says that in friendship there are emotions of benevolence and complacency which are felt towards others, . This can also be seen in Emersons words when he moves away from the abstract and generalized remarks on his experience with friendship. He states that a person seeks the company of a stranger when they believe that the stranger will give or inspire something that we currently lack. Though from the essay it turns out that Emerson does not have much to say about friendship, he states that the stranger who Emerson refers to as a friend awakens a desire for throbbing of the heart and the communications of the soul, . Emerson goes on to say that despite of this, sometimes friends disappoint us. He also states that friendship brings about doubt which is only justified by the course of our experience. Emersons logic is also seen in his discussion of the pleasures and advantages that come about as a result of having a friend. He says that friendship is an encounter of two, in a thought, in a feeling, . This however, is simply an image of friendship and perhaps just a simple admiration at a distance. Emerson continues to say that A new person is to me a great event and hinders me from sleep, . Here, he shows appreciation of the friend who brings him the best moments in life. However, the essay also shows Emersons skepticism about his friend. He says that though he feels proud when his friend accomplishes something, he overestimates the conscience of his friend. This statement means that we somewhat idolize our friends and they in turn also idolize us which makes friends unable to read each others reality and promise accurately. Emerson goes ahead to speak of the surprises and joy that comes from friendship. He, however, surprises us by saying that our friend is more limited than we actually though and that though we idolize and judge them, there is an infinite remoteness (62) between persons that makes the friendship limited. Emerson, however, says that friends are for us to grow with and to use to make a stable and unchanging relationship. Emersons logic is that as people grow, the souls of friends also grow making this a sound and valid logic. Emerson also gives a logical argument regarding the law of one to one (65) in friendship. Here he states that the common practice in friendship is to have two people and that a friendship between more than two people may not be feasible. This logic is lacking since what is required for a friendship is affinity that determines which two shall converse (65) and not will. His essay concludes that what is commonly referred to as friendship is not really friendship Friends, such as we desire, are dreams and fables, (67). This logic is sound and valid since we often paint an image of friendship that gives it much more credit than it deserves. Emersons essay on friendship is a mediation or a set of variations on the themes of hope and disappointment that we suffer in life as a result of others. Emersons essay on friendship progresses from a diffuse friendship which begins at a distance to the disappointment that comes from having friends to the reality of having friends in our lives and the promise of something better anything we have ever achieved.

Hemingways The Handle: Death and Deliverance :: essays research papers
The labyrinthine structure of what is perhaps Hemingway's least-anthologized novella, "The Handle," belies its peremptory dismissal by many critics as a hastily written jumble of vacuous dialogue wrapped around a poorly-contrived plot. "The Handle," a posthumously published novella that Hemingway penned in the frustrated years following his Nobel prize in literature for "The Old Man and the Sea," is the story of a farmer, set in a sleepy fictional province of rural Ohio, whose yearnings for a more transitory lifestyle are offset by a feeling of obligation to the land and the house and the profession of his father, his grandfather, and great-grandfather before him. Although the fields of Joseph Mallort are now little more than barren clumps of rock, tilled for generations until, as Hemingway writes, "the ground finally refused to yield," the farmer continues to plow his dusty, heat-cracked fields, hoping against hope to eek what little sustenance they might still provide. Although one may be tempted to draw the conclusion that Hemingway's barren fields are little more than a thinly-veiled expression of rising self-doubt about the author's own creative abilities that becomes prevalent in Hemingway's later years, to dismiss the story as nothing more than a straightforeward allegory is to do an injustice to its more intriguing thematic elements. Joeseph Mallort is a widower, living alone in the creaky old farmhouse of his father, who awakens in the predawn hours to milk the cows and get the plowing underway before the murderous sun beats down on him. By most afternoons he has succumbed to something that might be diagnosed as mild heat-stroke today, and wanders the fields aimless and slightly confused, murmuring one-sided conversations with his deceased wife, father, gandfather, and the original settler of the farm. Although the dialogue of "The Handle," represents a tenuous structural departure in that all of the secondary characters are either dead ghosts or mild halucinations, it is still chock full of the brisk versimilitude rendered in simple prose that is the hallmark of Heminway's finest passages. After a blight of cow-fever leaves Joseph without the chores of milking and feeding, he digs a mass grave for the cows and buries them under a mound of earth. Several days later, he's walking the perimeter of his fields, mending the barbed-wire fence, when the ghost of his grandfather begins to taunt him for wasting his time on the fence when all the cows are dead.

The Dream of Wind Power Becoming a Reality Essay -- Wind Power Essays
The Dream of Wind Power Becoming a Reality The United States and all of the industrialized nations were built and are currently sustained by the burning of millions of tons of fossil fuels. This method of producing power has had disastrous consequences on human beings and our environment, which include air pollution, global warming and acid rain. Ever since the realization of these consequences people all over the world have been searching for alternative energy sources that are clean and sustainable. One of these new alternative forms of power is actually an old technology reinvented, wind power. Until recently wind power was seen as a renewable resource that could work on a small scale to cut down energy costs, but which could never replace fossil fuels because there were too many obstacles to its implementation on a large scale. This paper will discuss the many ways that wind power has been improved in the past few decades, which today makes it a viable energy option. One of the main problems wind power was forced to deal with early on was efficiency issues both with the design of the wind turbines. The blades of a wind turbine have gone through many design changes over the past decades which are all aimed at increasing there ability to maximize rotation from just a little wind speed. Today's wind turbines mainly feature long thin blades with only one horizontal piece as opposed to the old wind turbines which had multiple blades and were usually much thicker. The general progression has been towards lighter, stronger materials usually composites, which allow the blades to rotate quickly and easily maximizing power conversion, but with standing high wind speeds (National Wind Technology Center). The progression in techn... ...see wind energy and other renewable resources nearly replace fossil fuel use in our lifetimes. Works Cited Anderson, Ian. 1997. ââ¬Å"Blowing Hot.â⬠New Scientist. 22. Antigone Foils Creon
In the play Antigone we learn about a stubborn character named Creon who is the ruler of Thebes. This ruler goes on many power trips through out the play, which end up leading to his demise. Antigone, sister of the former king Polyneices sees Creon as a man with to much power who is making poor decisions and acting against the Gods. In a face-to-face confrontation, Antigone does not back down from the powerful leader, and tells him that what he is doing is wrong. Creon, who still has too much pride, banishes her into a cave where she would be left to die. Only later does Creon realize that what she was saying was correct. He tries to fix all the mistakes he has made but is too late. Antigone is the foil to Creon because she brings out fear and many character trait flaws in the Kings personality. Creon has a major lapse in judgment when he decides to bury Antigone in a cave to die. She tells him that she does not care because she was honoring her brother. ââ¬Å"Why the delay? There is nothing that you can say that I should wish to hear, as nothing I say can weigh with youâ⬠¦.â⬠(Sophocles 500-7) At first, it does not seem that Creon feels bad about doing this. Later he understands that he was wrong and regrets his decisions. Antigone has a big affect on this change of heart from Creon because she truly believedà she was in the right. By believing this she forces Creon to finally notice that he was wrong, and reverses his decisions. Antigoneââ¬â¢s suicide effects Creon as a character immensely. It is her suicide that causes Heamon to stab himself. ââ¬Å"Who is dead, and by what hand? Heamon is dead, slain by his own father. His father? His own hand. His fatherââ¬Ës act it was that drove him to it.â⬠(1171-77 Sophocles) This later also leads to Eurydiceââ¬â¢s suicide at the end of the play. Through Antigoneââ¬â¢s actions, Creon is extremely effected. As a character, these events change the way Creon thinks about what he has done. ââ¬Å"There is no man can bear this guilt but I. It is true, I killed him. Lead me away, away. I live no longerâ⬠(1323-29 Sophocles) Antigone convinces Creon that he is not a God, and that going against the Gods is a bad idea. ââ¬Å"Yes. That order did not come from God. Justice, that dwells with the Gods below, knows no such lawâ⬠¦.â⬠(Sophocles 450-69) Antigone fights with all she has, and finally brings Creon to the realization that what he has done was wrong. When Creon realizes that Polyneices body is unburied, and that he has not given a proper burial to the 5 chieftains, he recognizes that this will upset anger the Gods considerably. She helps him realize his fault by having a reckless attitude, this shows Creon that she will not go down without a fight. She makes one last plea to the Gods by attempting to put a curse on him. I believe this scares Creon later and is one of the main reasons why he tries to reverse the decisions heââ¬â¢s made in the end. Creon gives the harsh penalty of not burying the dead Polyneices which is the ultimate punishment. Antigoneââ¬â¢s plea to show Creon that what he has done is wrong is ery evident at this point. ââ¬Å"So to my grave, My bridal-bower, my everlasting prison, I go those many of my kinsmen who dwell in the mansionâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Sophocles 892-919) Antigone believes that the God, along with her brother would be proud of what she has done. At first, Creon is to stubborn to listen to what she is saying. He later realizes that many of the things she said were right. Antigoneââ¬â¢s influence on Creonââ¬â¢s mind ultimately cause a change of heart. Without her this would not have happened. Without Antigone, Creonââ¬â¢s fears and character flaws would not have been exposed. Creonââ¬â¢s stubborn attitude and unwillingness to listen to others is his ultimate downfall. If he would have took Antigoneââ¬â¢s advice earlier, there is a chance he would not have lost everything that was important to him.

Issues in International Economics Essay
Introduction. Correct choice and application of marketing strategies can be regarded as one of the main keys to the success of the company. However, this task becomes particularly challenging nowadays, when the markets are characterized by severe volatility and companies are forced to function in a rapidly changing environment. As the centres of power and influence shift from one parts of the world to others, it is very important for the management of multinational corporations to expand their activities accordingly and ensure their presence in the new territories which offer the best business opportunities. Top European and American corporations have noticed long ago that home markets did not give them sufficient opportunities for growth, and started expanding to those countries which offered them possibilities to obtain large revenues in future. UKââ¬â¢s top supermarket Tesco regards international expansion as one of key determinants of its success in the world market. In this investigation it is expected to provide recommendations for the development of Tescoââ¬â¢s international strategy. The paper seeks to address this question by hypothesizing that China needs to become the key international destination for Tesco and the companyââ¬â¢s current state enables it to get well-positioned in Chinaââ¬â¢s retailing market in the following years. Primary attention is devoted to the determination of marketing mix components for Tesco in the new market and development of efficient methods of further marketing research. Characteristics of Tescoââ¬â¢s International Strategy. Tesco is one of the largest players among supermarket retailers in the UK. The range of services which the supermarket offers is literally unlimited. Tesco offers both food and non-food products, according clothing, electric appliances, entertainment goods and many other items. The managers of the store are sure that the large variety of products offered to the customers ensures the increasing profitability of the company. Tesco operates both in the international and in the home market. Tesco has expanded in twelve countries, including Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Thailand, Malaysia and others. Even though its share in relatively small in the international market, it has been growing during the last years. Tescoââ¬â¢s major competitors in the world market are Wal-Mart, Target, Carrefour and others. One of the major current competitors which Tesco has in the domestic market is Sainsbury because it is ranked second by the market share in the UK. Due to the efficient allocation of resources, Tesco has won the battle for the market share. ââ¬Å"TESCO has won the store wars, toppling Sainsburyââ¬â¢s from the number one spot after 10 years. The supermarket rang up pounds 13. 8 billion last year putting it pounds 400 million ahead of Sainsburyââ¬â¢s. â⬠(Kevan 1998: 2). The reason of this victory can be found in efficient pricing and consumer-oriented strategy applied by the company. Tesco managers combined high quality of products which attracts customers with relevant prices, and this increased the sales. Besides, innovation schemes have been applied by Tesco managers. Another reason of Tesco growing profitability is the quality of its human resources. The strategy of Tesco recruitment consists in employing people with great skills and high potential and providing very favourable working conditions for them. One of the recent innovations applied by the management include profit-share schemes which enable employees to participate in the profits of the company. ââ¬Å"The companyââ¬â¢s profit-share scheme, which is now the biggest of any private- sector UK company, is expected to pay out more than pounds 40 million in bonuses. The 106,000 staff included in the scheme will receive an extra four per cent on top of their pay. â⬠(Shillingford 1999, p. 46). In order to attract more customers, managers of Tesco constantly consider the variety of products offered and new markets in which the company could start offering its products. They constantly check for new products which can be needed by customers. Tesco has got involved in the e-commerce business due to its increasing importance in the world. Overall, Tescoââ¬â¢s advantage in comparison with ASDA and Sainsbury can be summarized in the following way, according to Tescoââ¬â¢s deputy chairman: ââ¬Å"If you wander around different stores, you might well be puzzled as to why one has higher revenues than another. The answer, I believe, depends to a large extent on how you deal with customers, which in turn depends on how you deal with your own staff. â⬠(Child 2002: 137). Conclusion. Tesco currently occupies a highly competitive position in the world retailing market. Due to its well-balanced international strategy, the company has already expanded in many countries in Europe and Asia and increased the shareholdersââ¬â¢ value as the result of these expansions. Tesco is growing faster than its competitors and thus needs to keep expand its activities internationally to obtain a larger share of the world market. Tesco has the highest growth potential in the industry of supermarket retailing, even in comparison with retailing giants which are much larger than Tesco by size. China gives Tesco a great opportunity for worldwide expansion because the number of consumers will be constantly growing in this country. Even though competition is currently large in Chinese market and represented by both local and international companies, Tesco is able to establish a firm position in this market by applying all of the tools which made it so successful in the domestic market and put at the top of the industry. Tesco has already expanded into many countries and it could search domination in such markets as, for example, Poland, Thailand, or South Korea. However, the growth potential of China is much larger than of the mentioned countries. By providing extensive investments into China and starting to conquer Chinese market, Tesco will be capable to ensure that its potential for growth in the following years will be fully realized.
